SENSATION PHOTOGRAPHY

NEW YORK

This exhibit aims to introduce Korean photography past and present. The exhibition will consist of four parts: portrait, cityscape, landscape, and still-life. These are the same sections addressed in Sensation Photography magazine, in order to put the magazine within the historical context of Korean photography.

Sensation Photography is a photo magazine that introduces the unknown work of well-known photographers. Sensation Photography focuses on the work that photographers love rather than the work that is popular with the public. Five to seven photographers are cast per issue. Sensation Photography contains ‘Sure and Pure’ which means off-frame is unique. Each photographer selects images and organizes their presentation, making it important to understand the photographers’ artistic viewpoint. Sensation Photography consists of several sections, which go beyond the images: the image-making process, theme, technique and style, and the photographers’ personal world.

SENSATION PHOTOGRAPHY :

FOCUS ON KOREAN DOCUMENTARY

NEW YORK

This exhibit aims to introduce Korean photography with the concept of memories. It is divided into two parts (two containers), and shows Korean photography, past and present, through archival documents and contemporary photography of Seoul. In the contemporary booth, 12 Seoul-based photographers focus on existence, identity, and Korean society. The archival booth shows the history of Seoul using records from public archives and photos from albums of ordinary people. All photographers have been published in the Korean photo magazine, Sensation Photography. All archival images were collected by Memory Plant, an independent social enterprise.

SENSATION PHOTOGRAPHY :

BETWEEN OR BORBER

NEW YORK

Koreans who live in other countries range from first-generation immigrants who left their homeland a long time ago to third- or fourth-generation Koreans who may have seen Korea only on a map. A large portion of these individuals doesn’t speak Korean and often aren’t interested in the Korean culture. Still, we habitually refer to them as “Koreans.” This mentality is not unique to Korea.

Last year, we focused on issues of identity, diaspora and boundaries for our photography book, “Between or Border”. Working on this book gave us the impression that the process of a language, or a culture taking root in another society, was an issue that is separate from the concept of identity itself.

The exhibition is divided into two part, all photographers in 1st section, talk about ‘outsiders’ or ‘strangers’ and show how their interpretation varies depending on where they are located. In 2nd section will be showed urbanity especially Seoul. All photographers are different nationality-but they just focused on city of ‘Seoul’. We invite our viewers to join us as we explore this line of thought.

PEOPLE, EARTH, AND

EXPERIMENTAL KOREAN PHOTOGRAPHY II

NEW YORK

People, Earth, and Experimental, the exhibition has introduced new work by the participating photographers at Photoville for past three years. It is a project that combines the appearance of a person exposed via photographic medium via changes in the physical space using experimental interpretations that make everything reproducible.

Jaegu Kang and Dongkeun Lee, focused on People. Jaegu shows the dual identity of Korean soldiers. Dongkeun shows the lives of North Korean defectors who want to settle down in the South.

Gun Young Lee and Seok Hoon Lee, feature the Earth. Gun Young is working to add depth to the landscape photographs by maximizing the tone of the black-and-white picture. Seok Hoon’s method of focusing on inverted images of plants presents a view of its inside.

Gyoosik Kim, Jeewon Kim, and Jung Hoon Lee, all concentrated on photographic experiments. Jung Hoon worked on the processed landscape which is rendered by the elements of symmetry and illusion. Gyoosik is working on finding the essence of photography through experimentation. Jeewon presented her ordinary home life as it was transformed by the exchange from medium format and 35mm film cameras.
